Even while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led us out to battle and brought us back.  The Lord also said to you, “You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will be ruler over Israel.” ’


In all my journeys with all the Israelites, have I ever spoken a word to one of the tribal leaders of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, asking: Why haven’t you built me a house of cedar? ”


Go and tell Jeroboam, “This is what the Lord God of Israel says: I raised you up from among the people, appointed you ruler over my people Israel,


So give your servant a receptive heart to judge  your people and to discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of yours? ’


He protects his flock like a shepherd; he gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them in the fold of his garment. He gently leads those that are nursing.


Since I have made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples,


I will give you shepherds who are loyal to me,  , and they will shepherd you with knowledge and skill.


Bethlehem Ephrathah, you are small among the clans of Judah; one will come from you to be ruler over Israel for me. His origin  is from antiquity, from ancient times.


He will stand and shepherd them in the strength of the  Lord, in the majestic name of the  Lord his God. They will live securely, for then his greatness will extend to the ends of the earth.

When he has brought all his own outside, he goes ahead of them. The sheep follow him because they know his voice.


The Lord said to Samuel, ‘How long are you going to mourn for Saul,  since I have rejected him as king over Israel?  Fill your horn with oil  and go. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem  because I have selected for myself a king from his sons.’


So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him  in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully on David from that day forward.  Then Samuel set out and went to Ramah.


Therefore, Saul sent David away from him and made him commander over a thousand men. David led the troops
