Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her, and raise up offspring for your brother.”
“‘If your brother becomes poor, and sells some of his possessions, then his kinsman who is next to him is to come and redeem what his brother has sold.
If the man doesn’t want to take his brother’s wife, then his brother’s wife is to go up to the gate to the elders, and say, “My husband’s brother refuses to carry on his brother’s name in Israel. He will not perform the duty of a husband’s brother to me.”
Then the elders of his city are to call him, and speak to him. If he stands and says, “I don’t want to take her,”
then his brother’s wife is to come to him in the presence of the elders, and remove his sandal from off his foot, and spit in his face. She will answer and say, “This is to be done to the man who does not build up his brother’s house.”
Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, “May YHWH bless him, the one who has not withdrawn his lovingkindness to the living and to the dead.” Then Naomi also said to her, “The man is our close relative, one of our kinsmen-redeemers.”
Stay here tonight. In the morning, if he will marry, good, let him marry you. But if he does not want to redeem you, then as YHWH lives-lives, I will do it. Lie here until the morning.”
He said, “Who are you?” She answered, “I am Ruth, your servant. Spread the edge of your garment over your servant because you are a kindman-redeemer.”
