There was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year; and David sought the face of YHWH. YHWH said, “It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he put the Gibeonites to death.”


The governor told them that they should not eat of the most holy things until a priest stood up to serve with Urim and with Thummim.

You are to put in the breastplate of judgment the Urim and the Thummim; and they are to be on Aaron’s heart, when he goes in before YHWH. Aaron will bear the judgment of the children of Israel on his heart before YHWH continually.

For the lips of the priest should preserve knowledge, and people should seek the instruction from his mouth, for he is the messenger of YHWH Almighty.

Moses did as YHWH commanded him. He took Joshua, and set him before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation.


Moses brought their cause before YHWH.


YHWH your God is the one who will cross over ahead you. Hᴇ will destroy these nations from before you, and you will dispossess them. Joshua will cross over ahead you, as YHWH has spoken.

While Saul talked to the priest, the tumult that was in the camp of the Philistines went on and increased; and Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand!”


David knew that Saul was devising mischief against him. He said to Abiathar the priest, “Bring the ephod here.”


When Saul inquired of YHWH, YHWH didn’t answer him by dreams, by Urim, or by prophets.


David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelech, “Please bring the ephod here to me.” Abiathar brought the ephod to David.
