Look, we bring our sons and our daughters into bondage to be servants, and some of our daughters have been brought into bondage. It is also not in our power to help it, because other men have our fields and our vineyards.”
I said to them, “As much as we could, we have redeemed our fellow Jews who were sold to the nations. But now y’all would sell your* brothers, so that we can buy them back?” Then they held their peace, and found not a word to say.
“If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve six years, and in the seventh he is to go out free without paying anything.
If the sun has risen on him, he is guilty of bloodshed. He must make restitution-restitution. If he has nothing, then he must be sold for his theft.
YHWH says, “Where is the bill of your mother’s divorce certificate that I used to put her away? To which of my creditors have I sold y’all? Look, y’all were sold for your* iniquities, and your* mother was put away for y’all’s transgressions.
“‘If your brother has grown poor among you, and sells himself to you, you must not make him to serve as a slave.
When he had begun to settle, a debtor who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him.
Neither had enough to repay, so he forgave the debts them both. Now which of them will love him more?”
