may our cattle be heavy with young, suffering no mischance or failure in bearing; may there be no cry of distress in our streets!


Give strong drink to him who is perishing, and wine to those in bitter distress;


And joy and gladness are taken away from the fruitful field; and in the vineyards no songs are sung, no shouts are raised; no treader treads out wine in the presses; the vintage shout is hushed.


In little more than a year you will shudder, you complacent women; for the vintage will fail, the fruit harvest will not come.


for the soil of my people growing up in thorns and briers; yea, for all the joyous houses in the joyful city.


and they will look to the earth, but behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish; and they will be thrust into thick darkness.


Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts the land is burned, and the people are like fuel for the fire; no man spares his brother.


“Judah mourns and her gates languish; her people lament on the ground, and the cry of Jerusalem goes up.

Gladness and joy have been taken away from the fruitful land of Moab; I have made the wine cease from the wine presses; no one treads them with shouts of joy; the shouting is not the shout of joy.


They do not cry to me from the heart, but they wail upon their beds; for grain and wine they gash themselves, they rebel against me.


The vine withers, the fig tree languishes. Pomegranate, palm, and apple, all the trees of the field are withered; and gladness fails from the sons of men.


Alas for the day! For the day of the Lord is near, and as destruction from the Almighty it comes.


But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish.
