If you would only keep silent, that would be your wisdom!


The upright are appalled at this, and the innocent stir themselves up against the godless.


When they saw him from a distance, they did not recognize him, and they raised their voices and wept aloud; they tore their robes and threw dust in the air upon their heads.


the nobles refrained from talking, and laid their hands on their mouths;


“See, I am of small account; what shall I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth.


I am silent; I do not open my mouth, for it is you who have done it.


If you have been foolish, exalting yourself, or if you have been devising evil, put your hand on your mouth.


so he shall startle many nations; kings shall shut their mouths because of him; for that which had not been told them they shall see, and that which they had not heard they shall contemplate.


Therefore the prudent will keep silent in such a time; for it is an evil time.


The nations shall see and be ashamed of all their might; they shall lay their hands on their mouths; their ears shall be deaf;


O the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!


They said to him, “Keep quiet! Put your hand over your mouth, and come with us, and be to us a father and a priest. Is it better for you to be priest to the house of one person, or to be priest to a tribe and clan in Israel?”
