After all that has come upon us for our evil deeds and for our great guilt, seeing that you, our God, have punished us less than our iniquities deserved and have given us such a remnant as this,


But oh, that God would speak, and open his lips to you,


“With God are wisdom and strength; he has counsel and understanding.


Are the consolations of God too small for you, or the word that deals gently with you?


For your iniquity teaches your mouth, and you choose the tongue of the crafty.


Have you listened in the council of God? And do you limit wisdom to yourself?


Is not your wickedness great? There is no end to your iniquities.


And he said to humankind, ‘Truly, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.’ ”


“But in this you are not right. I will answer you: God is greater than any mortal.


He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength —who has resisted him, and succeeded?—


He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities.


The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him, and he makes his covenant known to them.


The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end;


but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has disclosed to King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen at the end of days. Your dream and the visions of your head as you lay in bed were these:


The king said to Daniel, “Truly, your God is God of gods and Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries, for you have been able to reveal this mystery!”


This was to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet: “I will open my mouth to speak in parables; I will proclaim what has been hidden from the foundation of the world.”


In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit:


The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the revealed things belong to us and to our children forever, to observe all the words of this law.
