She continued, ‘Long ago they used to say, “Get your answer at Abel,” and that settled it.


He appointed judges in the land, in each of the fortified cities of Judah.


They will be places of refuge from the avenger, so that anyone accused of murder may not die before they stand trial before the assembly.


‘You have heard that it was said, “You shall not commit adultery.”


‘Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, “Do not break your oath, but fulfil to the Lord the oaths you have made.”


‘You have heard that it was said, “Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.”


‘You have heard that it was said, “Love your neighbour and hate your enemy.”


Appoint judges and officials for each of your tribes in every town the Lord your God is giving you, and they shall judge the people fairly.


Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.
