One basket had very good figs, like those that ripen early; the other basket had very bad figs, so bad that they could not be eaten.


‘I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.


‘Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time?


The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them.


The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps.


‘ “No,” they replied, “there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.”


They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.


Though you already know all this, I want to remind you that the Lord at one time delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe.
