Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders of units of a hundred, who were in charge of the troops: ‘Bring her out between the ranks and put to the sword anyone who follows her.’ For the priest had said, ‘She must not be put to death in the temple of the Lord.’


While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people.


In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, ‘Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me.


It is written: “And he was numbered with the transgressors”; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfilment.’


And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus.


But Jesus answered, ‘No more of this!’ And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.


Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour – when darkness reigns.’


While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.


At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people would stone them.
