That evening, just before bedtime, men from every part of town came to Lot’s house. The men from Sodom stood around the house and called to Lot. They said,

But our ancestors quickly forgot about the things God did.\par They did not listen to God’s advice.\par
Lord, our ancestors in Egypt learned nothing\par from the miracles you did.\par There by the Red Sea,\par our ancestors turned against you.\par
They said to Moses, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt? Why did you bring us out here in the desert to die? We could have died peacefully in Egypt—there were plenty of graves in Egypt.
The people began complaining to Moses. The people said, “Now what will we drink?”
But the people were very thirsty for water. So they continued complaining to Moses. The people said, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt? Did you bring us out here so that we, our children, and our cattle will all die without water?”
So they said to Moses and Aaron, “You really made a mistake when you told Pharaoh to let us go. May the Lord punish you because you caused Pharaoh and his rulers to hate us. You have given them an excuse to kill us.”
None of the people I led out of Egypt will ever see the land of Canaan. Those people saw my glory and the great signs that I did in Egypt. And they saw the great things that I did in the desert. But they disobeyed me and tested me ten times.
And don’t complain like some of those people did. Those people were killed by the angel that destroys.
