The Gibeonites were not Israelites but rather a remnant of the Amorites. The Israelites had taken an oath concerning them,  but Saul had tried to kill them in his zeal for the Israelites and Judah. So David summoned the Gibeonites and spoke to them.


Then he said, ‘Come with me and see my zeal  for the Lord! ’ So he let him ride with him in his chariot.


Don’t be excessively righteous, and don’t be overly wise.  Why should you destroy yourself?


But if the raw flesh changes  and  turns white, he is to go to the priest.


‘Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed   and self-indulgence.


For I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.


Both were righteous in God’s sight,  living blamelessly  according to all the commands and requirements of the Lord.


When they heard it, they glorified God and said, ‘You see, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are who have believed, and they are all zealous  for the law.


as both the high priest and the whole council of elders can testify about me. After I received letters from them to the brothers, I travelled to Damascus to arrest those who were there and bring them to Jerusalem to be punished.


They have known me for a long time, if they are willing to testify, that according to the strictest sect of our religion I lived as a Pharisee.


Saul,  however, was ravaging the church. He would enter house after house, drag off men and women, and put them in prison.

Give no offence  to Jews or Greeks or the church of God,

so that you may be blameless  and pure,  children of God who are faultless  in a crooked  and perverted  generation,  among whom you shine like stars in the world,


and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own from the law,  but one that is through faith in Christ   #– #the righteousness from God based on faith.


even though I was formerly a blasphemer,  a persecutor,  and an arrogant man.  But I received mercy because I acted out of ignorance in unbelief,


Then the men of the city said to Joash, ‘Bring out your son. He must die, because he tore down Baal’s altar and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.’
