When daylight came,  the elders  of the people, both the chief priests and the scribes,  convened and brought him before their Sanhedrin.


In those days Peter stood up among the brothers and sisters   #– #the number of people who were together was about a hundred twenty #– #and said,


‘Brothers and sisters, children of Abraham’s race, and those among you who fear God, it is to us that the word of this salvation has been sent.


‘Brothers and sisters, I can confidently speak to you about the patriarch David: He is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.


‘Brothers and fathers, listen now to my defence before you.’


Paul looked straight at the Sanhedrin and said, ‘Brothers, I have lived my life before God in all good conscience  to this day.’


When Paul realised that one part of them were Sadducees and the other part were Pharisees, he cried out in the Sanhedrin, ‘Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees.  I am being judged because of the hope of the resurrection of the dead! ’


I actually did this in Jerusalem, and I locked up many of the saints in prison, since I had received authority for that from the chief priests. When they were put to death, I was in agreement against them.


In all the synagogues I often punished them and tried to make them blaspheme.  Since I was terribly enraged at them, I pursued them even to foreign cities.


‘I was travelling to Damascus under  these circumstances with authority and a commission from the chief priests.


After three days he called together the leaders of the Jews. When they had gathered he said to them, ‘Brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or the customs of our ancestors, I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.


Then they said to him, ‘We haven’t received any letters about you from Judea. None of the brothers has come and reported or spoken anything evil about you.


‘And now, brothers and sisters, I know that you acted in ignorance, just as your leaders also did.


The next day, their rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem


Hearing this, they entered the temple at daybreak and began to teach. When the high priest and those who were with him arrived, they convened the Sanhedrin #– #the full council of the Israelites #– #and sent orders to the jail to have them brought.


And he has authority here from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.’


For you have heard about my former way of life  in Judaism:  I intensely persecuted  God’s church and tried to destroy it.


regarding zeal,  persecuting  the church; regarding the righteousness that is in the law,  blameless.


Don’t neglect the gift that is in you; it was given to you through prophecy,  with the laying on of hands  by the council of elders.
