When they looked from a distance, they could barely recognise him. They wept aloud,  and each man tore his robe and threw dust into the air and on his head.


‘Make a bronze basin  for washing and a bronze stand for it. Set it between the tent of meeting and the altar, and put water in it.


Lord, the hope of Israel, all who abandon you will be put to shame. All who turn away from me will be written in the dirt, for they have abandoned the Lord, the fountain of living water.


Let him put his mouth in the dust   – perhaps there is still hope.


‘The priest is to bring her forward and make her stand before the Lord.


After the priest has the woman stand before the Lord, he is to let down her hair  and place in her hands the grain offering for remembrance, which is the grain offering of jealousy. The priest is to hold the bitter water that brings a curse.


They asked this to trap him,  in order that they might have evidence to accuse him. Jesus stooped down and started writing on the ground with his finger.


Then he stooped down again and continued writing on the ground.
