We and our children are just like our countrymen and their children, yet we are subjecting our sons and daughters to slavery.  Some of our daughters are already enslaved,  but we are powerless  because our fields and vineyards belong to others.’


‘When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod, and the slave dies under his abuse,  the owner must be punished.


eye for eye, tooth for tooth,  hand for hand, foot for foot,


burn for burn, bruise for bruise, wound for wound.


If he knocks out the tooth of his male or female slave, he must let the slave go free in compensation for his tooth.


And masters, treat your slaves the same way, without threatening  them, because you know that both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favouritism  with him.


Do not deny justice or show partiality to anyone. Do not accept a bribe, for it blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous.


Masters,  deal with your slaves justly and fairly, since you know that you too have a Master in heaven.
