Even after this event Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way but made priests for the high places again from among all the people; any who wanted to be priests he consecrated for the high places.


Again the king sent the captain of a third fifty with his fifty. So the third captain of fifty went up and came and fell on his knees before Elijah and entreated him, “O man of God, please let my life and the life of these fifty servants of yours be precious in your sight.


For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the entire earth to strengthen those whose heart is true to him. You have done foolishly in this, for from now on you will have wars.”


In the time of his distress he became yet more faithless to the Lord—this same King Ahaz.


You desire truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart.

The wicked put on a bold face, but the upright give thought to their ways.


The eyes of the Lord keep watch over knowledge, but he overthrows the words of the faithless.


“They struck me,” you will say, “but I was not hurt; they beat me, but I did not feel it. When shall I awake? I will seek another drink.”


Crush a fool in a mortar with a pestle along with crushed grain, but the folly will not be driven out.


O Lord, your hand is lifted up, but they do not see it. Let them see your zeal for your people and be ashamed. Let the fire for your adversaries consume them.


So he poured upon him the heat of his anger and the fury of war; it set him on fire all around, but he did not understand; it burned him, but he did not take it to heart.


Because I know that you are obstinate, and your neck is an iron sinew and your forehead brass,


The people did not turn to him who struck them or seek the Lord of hosts.


I have winnowed them with a winnowing fork in the gates of the land; I have bereaved them; I have destroyed my people; they did not turn from their ways.


Yet they did not listen or incline their ear; they stiffened their necks and would not hear or receive instruction.


Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: I am now bringing upon this city and upon all its towns all the disaster that I have pronounced against it, because they have stiffened their necks, refusing to hear my words.


In vain I have struck down your children; they accepted no correction. Your own sword devoured your prophets like a ravening lion.


Therefore the showers have been withheld, and the spring rain has not come, yet you have the forehead of a prostitute; you refuse to be ashamed.


great in counsel and mighty in deed, whose eyes are open to all the ways of mortals, rewarding all according to their ways and according to the fruit of their doings.


Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Go and say to the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, Can you not learn a lesson and obey my words? says the Lord.


They have shown no contrition or fear to this day, nor have they walked in my law and my statutes that I set before you and before your ancestors.


yet they did not listen to me or pay attention, but they stiffened their necks. They did worse than their ancestors did.


You shall say to them: This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the Lord their God and did not accept discipline; truth has perished; it is cut off from their lips.


Why then has this people turned away in perpetual faithlessness? They have held fast to deceit; they have refused to return.


The descendants are impudent and stubborn. I am sending you to them, and you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God.’


Yet when I cleansed you in your filthy lewdness, you did not become clean from your filth; you shall not again be cleansed until I have satisfied my fury upon you.


Just as it is written in the law of Moses, all this calamity has come upon us. We did not entreat the favor of the Lord our God, turning from our iniquities and reflecting on his fidelity.


“If in spite of these punishments you have not turned back to me but continue hostile to me,


I sent among you a pestilence after the manner of Egypt; I killed your young men with the sword; I carried away your horses; and I made the stench of your camp go up into your nostrils; yet you did not return to me, says the Lord.


I overthrew some of you as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were like a brand snatched from the fire; yet you did not return to me, says the Lord.


I gave you cleanness of teeth in all your cities and lack of bread in all your places; yet you did not return to me, says the Lord.


so two or three towns wandered to one town to drink water and were not satisfied; yet you did not return to me, says the Lord.


I struck you with blight and mildew; I laid waste your gardens and your vineyards; the locust devoured your fig trees and your olive trees; yet you did not return to me, says the Lord.


I said, “Surely the city will fear me; it will accept correction; it will not lose sight of all that I have brought upon it.” But they were the more eager to make all their deeds corrupt.


We know that God’s judgment on those who do such things is in accordance with truth.


Moreover, we had human parents to discipline us, and we respected them. Should we not be even more willing to be subject to the Father of spirits and live?
