“See the one who would not take refuge in God but trusted in abundant riches and sought refuge in wealth!”


Put no confidence in extortion, and set no vain hopes on robbery; if riches increase, do not set your heart on them.


A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but an accurate weight is his delight.


There are those who are pure in their own eyes, yet are not cleansed of their filthiness.


This is the way of an adulteress: she eats and wipes her mouth and says, “I have done no wrong.”


How can you say, “I am not defiled; I have not gone after the Baals”? Look at your way in the valley; know what you have done: a restive young camel interlacing her tracks,


you say, “I am innocent; surely his anger has turned from me.” Now I am bringing you to judgment for saying, “I have not sinned.”


Like a cage full of birds, their houses are full of treachery; therefore they have become great and rich;


By your great wisdom in trade you have increased your wealth, and your heart has become proud in your wealth.


When I fed them, they were satisfied; they were satisfied, and their heart was proud; therefore they forgot me.


Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God, for you have stumbled because of your iniquity.


They feed on the sin of my people; they are greedy for their iniquity.


saying, “When will the new moon be over so that we may sell grain, and the Sabbath, so that we may offer wheat for sale? We will make the ephah smaller and the shekel heavier and practice deceit with false balances,


Therefore he sacrifices to his net and makes offerings to his seine, for by them his portion is lavish, and his food is rich.


Those who buy them kill them and go unpunished, and those who sell them say, ‘Blessed be the Lord, for I have become rich,’ and their own shepherds have no pity on them.


You have wearied the Lord with your words. Yet you say, “How have we wearied him?” By saying, “All who do evil are good in the sight of the Lord, and he delights in them.” Or by asking, “Where is the God of justice?”


You have spoken harsh words against me, says the Lord. Yet you say, “How have we spoken against you?”


But wanting to vindicate himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”


And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’


No slave can serve two masters, for a slave will either hate the one and love the other or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.”


So he said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of others, but God knows your hearts, for what is prized by humans is an abomination in the sight of God.


Do not say to yourself, ‘My power and the might of my own hand have gotten me this wealth.’


As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches but rather on God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.


and wrangling among those who are depraved in mind and bereft of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain.


For you say, ‘I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing.’ You do not realize that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.
