I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if one can count the dust of the earth, your offspring also can be counted.


He brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your descendants be.”


He looked up and saw three men standing near him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent entrance to meet them and bowed down to the ground.


I will indeed bless you, and I will make your offspring as numerous as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of their enemies,


two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,


Jacob said, “No, please; if I find favor with you, then accept my present from my hand, for truly to see your face is like seeing the face of God, since you have received me with such favor.


Esau said, “What do you mean by all this company that I met?” Jacob answered, “To find favor with my lord.”


Now Joseph was governor over the land; it was he who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph’s brothers came and bowed themselves before him with their faces to the ground.


Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: take some of the choice fruits of the land in your bags, and carry them down as a present to the man: a little balm and a little honey, gum, resin, pistachio nuts, and almonds.


When Joseph came home, they brought him the present that they had carried into the house and bowed to the ground before him.


So in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, in open places, I stationed the people according to their families, with their swords, their spears, and their bows.


A bribe is like a magic stone in the eyes of those who give it; wherever they turn they prosper.


A gift opens doors; it gives access to the great.


Many seek the favor of the generous, and everyone is a friend to a giver of gifts.


A gift in secret averts anger, and a concealed bribe, strong wrath.


And now let this present that your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who follow my lord.


Ask your young men, and they will tell you. Therefore let my young men find favor in your sight, for we have come on a feast day. Please give whatever you have at hand to your servants and to your son David.’ ”
