but he walked in the way of the kings of Israel. He even made his son pass through fire, according to the abominable practices of the nations whom the Lord had driven out before the people of Israel.


The Lord said by his servants the prophets,


Manasseh misled Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that they did more evil than the nations whom the Lord had destroyed before the people of Israel.


but they kept mocking the messengers of God, despising his words, and scoffing at his prophets until the wrath of the Lord against his people became so great that there was no remedy.


“Nevertheless, they were disobedient and rebelled against you and cast your law behind their backs and killed your prophets, who had warned them in order to turn them back to you, and they committed great blasphemies.


On every side the wicked prowl, as vileness is exalted among humankind.


I am the Lord your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.


If a ruler listens to falsehood, all his officials will be wicked.


Then you shall know that I am the Lord, whose statutes you have not followed and whose ordinances you have not kept, but you have acted according to the ordinances of the nations that are around you.”


You not only followed their ways and acted according to their abominations; within a very little time you were more corrupt than they in all your ways.


You shall say: Thus says the Lord God: A city! Shedding blood within itself; its time has come; making its idols, defiling itself.


But she has rebelled against my ordinances and my statutes, becoming more wicked than the nations and the countries all around her, rejecting my ordinances and not following my statutes.


Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because you are more turbulent than the nations that are all around you and have not followed my statutes or kept my ordinances and have not even acted according to the ordinances of the nations that are all around you,


We have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes, and our ancestors, and to all the people of the land.


Ephraim is oppressed, crushed in judgment, because he was determined to go after vanity.


Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!


If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.


Anyone, then, who knows the right thing to do and fails to do it commits sin.


But I have this against you: you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophet and is teaching and beguiling my servants to engage in sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols.


But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; they said, “No! We are determined to have a king over us,
