The priest Uriah built the altar; in accordance with all that King Ahaz had sent from Damascus, so did the priest Uriah build it, before King Ahaz arrived from Damascus.


He built altars in the house of the Lord, of which the Lord had said, “In Jerusalem I will put my name.”


The Lord said, “I will remove Judah also out of my sight, as I have removed Israel, and I will reject this city that I have chosen, Jerusalem, and the house of which I said, ‘My name shall be there.’ ”


The king commanded the high priest Hilkiah, the priests of the second order, and the guardians of the threshold to bring out of the temple of the Lord all the vessels made for Baal, for Asherah, and for all the host of heaven; he burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of the Kidron and carried their ashes to Bethel.


He brought out the image of Asherah from the house of the Lord, outside Jerusalem, to the Wadi Kidron, burned it at the Wadi Kidron, beat it to dust, and threw the dust of it upon the graves of the common people.


He took away the foreign gods and the idol from the house of the Lord and all the altars that he had built on the mountain of the house of the Lord and in Jerusalem, and he threw them out of the city.


The carved image of the idol that he had made he set in the house of God, of which God had said to David and to his son Solomon, “In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put my name forever;


but I have chosen Jerusalem in order that my name may be there, and I have chosen David to be over my people Israel.’


Then the Lord appeared to Solomon in the night and said to him, “I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for myself as a house of sacrifice.


For now I have chosen and consecrated this house so that my name may be there forever; my eyes and my heart will be there for all time.


then I will pluck you up from the land that I have given you, and this house, which I have consecrated for my name, I will cast out of my sight and will make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples.


but if you return to me and keep my commandments and do them, though your outcasts are under the farthest skies, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place where I have chosen to establish my name.’


Remember your congregation, which you acquired long ago, which you redeemed to be the tribe of your heritage. Remember Mount Zion, where you came to dwell.


For they provoked him to anger with their high places; they moved him to jealousy with their idols.


They set up their abominations in the house that bears my name and defiled it.


For the people of Judah have done evil in my sight, says the Lord; they have set their abominations in the house that is called by my name, defiling it.


Moreover, this they have done to me: they have defiled my sanctuary on the same day and profaned my Sabbaths.


“You shall not plant any tree as a sacred pole beside the altar that you make for the Lord your God,
