And when the Lord smelled the pleasing odor, the Lord said in his heart, “I will never again curse the ground because of humans, for the inclination of the human heart is evil from youth; nor will I ever again destroy every living creature as I have done.


and said to them, “You shall not bring the captives in here, for you propose to bring on us guilt against the Lord in addition to our present sins and guilt. For our guilt is already great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel.”


Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, “You have trespassed and married foreign women and so increased the guilt of Israel.


Did not your ancestors act in this way, and did not our God bring all this disaster on us and on this city? Yet you bring more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”


Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? No one can.


but turned away and were faithless like their ancestors; they twisted like a treacherous bow.


Woe, sinful nation, people laden with iniquity, offspring who do evil, children who act corruptly, who have forsaken the Lord, who have despised the Holy One of Israel, [[who are utterly estranged!]]


Whom are you mocking? Against whom do you open your mouth wide and stick out your tongue? Are you not children of transgression, the offspring of deceit—


But the children rebelled against me; they did not follow my statutes and were not careful to observe my ordinances, by whose observance everyone shall live; they profaned my Sabbaths. Then I thought I would pour out my wrath upon them and spend my anger against them in the wilderness.


If you turn away from following him, he will again abandon them in the wilderness, and you will destroy all this people.”


So you are witnesses and approve of the deeds of your ancestors, for they killed them, and you build their tombs.


You have been rebellious against the Lord as long as he has known you.
