Our soul has had more than its fill of the scorn of those who are at ease, of the contempt of the proud.

But I am a worm and not human, scorned by others and despised by the people.

Let the lying lips be stilled that speak insolently against the righteous with pride and contempt.

This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”

Many of them were saying, “He has a demon and is out of his mind. Why listen to him?”

The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who is trying to kill you?”

The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find him? Does he intend to go to the dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?

The Jews answered him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?”

The Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died, and so did the prophets, yet you say, ‘Whoever keeps my word will never taste death.’

Let us then go to him outside the camp and bear the abuse he endured.
