Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath

1 Nowit happenedthat He was passingthrough[some] grainfieldson a Sabbath;and His discipleswere pickingthe heads of grain,rubbingthem in their hands,and eating[the grain].

2 But someof the Phariseessaid,"Whydo you dowhatis not lawfulon the Sabbath?"

3 And Jesusansweringthem said,"Have you not evenreadwhatDaviddidwhenhe was hungry,he and thosewho were with him,

4 howhe enteredthe houseof God,and tookand atethe consecratedbreadwhichis not lawfulfor any to eatexceptthe priestsalone,and gaveit to his companions?"

5 And He was sayingto them, "The Sonof Manis Lordof the Sabbath."

6 On anotherSabbathHe enteredthe synagogueand was teaching;and there was a mantherewhoserighthandwas withered.

7 The scribesand the Phariseeswere watching Him closely[to see] ifHe healedon the Sabbath,sothat they might find[reason] to accuseHim.

8 But He knewwhat they were thinking,and He saidto the manwith the witheredhand,"Getup and comeforward!"And he gotup and cameforward.

9 And Jesussaidto them, "I askyou, is it lawfulto do goodorto do harmon the Sabbath,to savea lifeorto destroyit?"

10 After looking aroundat them all,He saidto him, "Stretchout your hand!"And he did[so]; and his handwas restored.

11 But they themselveswere filledwith rage,and discussedtogetherwhatthey might doto Jesus.


Choosing the Twelve

12 It was at thistimethat He went offto the mountainto pray,and He spent the whole nightin prayerto God.

13 And whendaycame,He calledHis disciplesto Him and chosetwelveof them, whomHe alsonamedas apostles:

14 Simon,whomHe alsonamedPeter,and Andrewhis brother;and Jamesand John;and Philipand Bartholomew;

15 and Matthewand Thomas;James[the son] of Alphaeus,and Simonwho was calledthe Zealot;

16 Judas[the son] of James,and JudasIscariot,whobecamea traitor.

17 Jesus came downwith them and stoodon a levelplace;and [there was] a largecrowdof His disciples,and a greatthrongof peoplefrom allJudeaand Jerusalemand the coastal regionof Tyreand Sidon,

18 whohad cometo hearHim and to be healedof their diseases;and thosewho were troubledwith uncleanspiritswere being cured.

19 And allthe peoplewere tryingto touchHim, for powerwas comingfrom Him and healing[them] all.


The Beatitudes

20 And turningHis gazetowardHis disciples,He [began] to say,"Blessed[are] you [who are] poor,for yoursis the kingdomof God.

21 "Blessed[are] you who hungernow,for you shall be satisfied.Blessed[are] you who weepnow,for you shall laugh.

22 "Blessedare you whenmenhateyou, and ostracizeyou, and insultyou, and scornyour nameas evil,for the sakeof the Sonof Man.

23 "Be gladin that dayand leap[for joy], for behold,your rewardis greatin heaven.For in the samewaytheir fathersused to treatthe prophets.

24 "But woeto you who are rich,for you are receivingyour comfortin full.

25 "Woeto you who are well-fednow,for you shall be hungry.Woe[to you] who laughnow,for you shall mournand weep.

26 "Woe[to you] whenallmenspeakwellof you, for their fathersused to treatthe false prophetsin the sameway.

27 "But I sayto you who hear,loveyour enemies,dogoodto thosewho hateyou,

28 blessthosewho curseyou, prayfor thosewho mistreatyou.

29 "Whoever hitsyou on the cheek,offerhim the otheralso;and whoever takes awayyour coat,do not withholdyour shirtfrom him either.

30 "Giveto everyonewho asksof you, and whoever takes awaywhatis yours,do not demand it back.

31 "Treatothersthe same wayyou wantthem to treatyou.

32 "Ifyou lovethosewho loveyou, whatcreditis [that] to you? For evensinnerslovethosewho lovethem.

33 "Ifyou dogoodto thosewho do goodto you, whatcreditis [that] to you? For evensinnersdothe same.

34 "Ifyou lendto those from whomyou expectto receive,whatcreditis [that] to you? Evensinnerslendto sinnersin orderto receive backthe same[amount].

35 "But loveyour enemies,and do good,and lend,expectingnothingin return;and your rewardwill be great,and you will be sonsof the Most High;for He Himselfis kindto ungratefuland evil[men].

36 "Be merciful,justas your Fatheris merciful.

37 "Do not judge,and you will not be judged;and do not condemn,and you will not be condemned;pardon,and you will be pardoned.

38 "Give,and it will be givento you. They will pourinto your lapa goodmeasure--pressed down,shaken together,[and] running over.For by your standardof measureit will be measured to you in return."

39 And He alsospokea parableto them: "A blindmancannotguidea blind man,can he? Will they not bothfallinto a pit?

40 "A pupilis not abovehis teacher;but everyone,after he has been fully trained,will be likehis teacher.

41 "Whydo you lookat the speckthat is in your brother'seye,but do not noticethe logthat is in your owneye?

42 "Or howcanyou sayto your brother,'Brother,letme takeout the speckthat is in your eye,'when you yourselfdo not seethe logthat is in your own eye?You hypocrite,firsttakethe logout of your own eye,and thenyou will see clearlyto takeout the speckthat is in your brother'seye.

43 "For there is nogoodtreewhich producesbadfruit,nor,on the other hand,a badtreewhich producesgoodfruit.

44 "For eachtreeis knownby its ownfruit.For men do not gatherfigsfrom thorns,nordo they pickgrapesfrom a briar bush.

45 "The goodmanout of the goodtreasureof his heartbringsforthwhat is good;and the evil[man] out of the evil[treasure] brings forthwhat is evil;for his mouthspeaksfrom that which fillshis heart.


Builders and Foundations

46 "Whydo you callMe, 'Lord,Lord,'and do not dowhatI say?

47 "Everyonewho comesto Me and hearsMy wordsand actson them, I will showyou whomhe is like:

48 he is likea manbuildinga house,whodugdeepand laida foundationon the rock;and when a floodoccurred,the torrentburst againstthat houseand couldnot shakeit, becauseit had been wellbuilt.

49 "But the one who has heardand has not acted[accordingly], is likea manwho builta houseon the groundwithoutany foundation;and the torrentburst againstit and immediatelyit collapsed,and the ruinof that housewas great."
