The Passion Translation

May cries be heard from their homes as you suddenly bring raiders upon them without warning. For they’ve dug a pit to catch me and hidden snares for my feet.

Arrogant men who hate your truth and never obey your laws have laid a trap for my life.

They are proud and insolent; they’ve set an ambush for me in secret. They are determined to snare me in their net like captured prey. Pause in his presence

O Lord, you are my God and my saving strength! My Hero-God, you wrap yourself around me to protect me. For I’m surrounded by your presence in my day of battle. Lord Yahweh, hear my cry. May my voice move your heart to show me mercy.

I look to my left and right to see if there is anyone who will help, but there’s no one who takes notice of me. I have no hope of escape, and no one cares whether I live or die.

Meanwhile my enemies are out to kill me, plotting my ruin, speaking of my doom as they spend every waking moment planning how to finish me off.

Cry aloud, O daughter of Gallim! Listen, O Laishah! Poor Anathoth!

Good should not be repaid with evil, but look! They are digging a pit for me. Remember how I made intercession for them, pleading in your presence to turn away your wrath from them?

For I heard them whispering behind my back: “Terror everywhere! That’s all he prophesies.” All my close friends watch for me to fall. “Let’s turn him in to the authorities,” they say. “Perhaps we can set a trap for him. Finally, we will prevail over him and take our revenge on him.”

Let that man be like the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah that Yahweh destroyed without pity. Let him hear shouts of alarm in the morning and battle cries at noon.

I heard a cry of a woman gasping in labor pains; I saw her writhing in distress as one giving birth to her first child. It is the daughter of Zion, gasping and stretching out her hands for help, saying: “I’m staring at death! I’m fainting before my murderers!”

“Lurking among my people are wicked criminals. They are like hunters hiding to catch birds in their nets, setting their traps to catch people.

My dear people, it’s time to mourn. Put on sackcloth and sprinkle ashes on yourselves. Mourn as you would for an only child. Wail bitterly, for suddenly the destroyer will be upon us.
