“ ‘Because of this, I am going to bring disaster on the house of Jeroboam. I will cut off from Jeroboam every last male in Israel—slave or free. I will burn up the house of Jeroboam as one burns dung, until it is all gone.

This was the sin of the house of Jeroboam that led to its downfall and to its destruction from the face of the earth.

They will destroy the walls of Tyre and pull down her towers; I will scrape away her rubble and make her a bare rock.

When a trumpet sounds in a city, do not the people tremble? When disaster comes to a city, has not the Lord caused it?

“I will bring such distress on all people that they will grope about like those who are blind, because they have sinned against the Lord. Their blood will be poured out like dust and their entrails like dung.

“Because of you I will rebuke your descendants; I will smear on your faces the dung from your festival sacrifices, and you will be carried off with it.

The Lord will vindicate his people and relent concerning his servants when he sees their strength is gone and no one is left, slave or free.

“Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I promised that members of your family would minister before me forever.’ But now the Lord declares: ‘Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained.

May God deal with David, be it ever so severely, if by morning I leave alive one male of all who belong to him!”

Otherwise, as surely as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, who has kept me from harming you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, not one male belonging to Nabal would have been left alive by daybreak.”
