Abraham spoke up again: “See how I am presuming to speak to my Lord, though I am only dust and ashes!

By the sweat of your brow you shall eat bread, Until you return to the ground, from which you were taken; For you are dust, and to dust you shall return.

We must indeed die; we are then like water that is poured out on the ground and cannot be gathered up. Yet, though God does not bring back to life, he does devise means so as not to banish anyone from him.

Oh, remember that you fashioned me from clay! Will you then bring me down to dust again?

My bones cling to my skin, and I have escaped by the skin of my teeth.

The voice of the princes was silenced, and their tongues stuck to the roofs of their mouths.

And now my life ebbs away from me, days of affliction have taken hold of me.

All flesh would perish together, and mortals return to dust.

Why do you not pardon my offense, or take away my guilt? For soon I shall lie down in the dust; and should you seek me I shall be gone.

When you hide your face, they panic. Take away their breath, they perish and return to the dust.

To you, Lord, I cried out; with the Lord I pleaded for mercy:

My Lord, my deepest yearning is before you; my groaning is not hidden from you.

Insult has broken my heart, and I despair; I looked for compassion, but there was none, for comforters, but found none.

I have sunk into the mire of the deep, where there is no foothold. I have gone down to the watery depths; the flood overwhelms me.

A joyful heart is the health of the body, but a depressed spirit dries up the bones.

Therefore I will give him his portion among the many, and he shall divide the spoils with the mighty, Because he surrendered himself to death, was counted among the transgressors, Bore the sins of many, and interceded for the transgressors.

The tongue of the infant cleaves to the roof of its mouth in thirst; Children beg for bread, but no one gives them a piece.

Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake; Some to everlasting life, others to reproach and everlasting disgrace.

But Jesus cried out again in a loud voice, and gave up his spirit.

After this, aware that everything was now finished, in order that the scripture might be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I thirst.”

For I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures;
