In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth—

For the leader. A psalm of David.

When he set for the sea its limit, so that the waters should not transgress his command; When he fixed the foundations of earth,

Who has measured with his palm the waters, marked off the heavens with a span, held in his fingers the dust of the earth, weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance?

Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and its produce, Who gives breath to its people and spirit to those who walk on it:

Yes, my hand laid the foundations of the earth; my right hand spread out the heavens. When I summon them, they stand forth at once.
