When Jehu rejoined his master’s servants, they asked him, “Is all well? Why did that madman come to you?” He replied, “You know that kind of man and his talk.”

“It is the Lord who has appointed you priest in place of the priest Jehoiada, to provide officers for the house of the Lord, that you may confine in stocks or pillory any madman who poses as a prophet.

They have come, the days of punishment! they have come, the days of recompense! Let Israel know it! “The prophet is a fool, the man of the spirit is mad!” Because your iniquity is great, great, too, is your hostility.

When his relatives heard of this they set out to seize him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.”

The Jews were amazed and said, “How does he know scripture without having studied?”

The Jews answered and said to him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and are possessed?”

[So] the Jews said to him, “Now we are sure that you are possessed. Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, ‘Whoever keeps my word will never taste death.’

When they heard about resurrection of the dead, some began to scoff, but others said, “We should like to hear you on this some other time.”

“My brothers and fathers, listen to what I am about to say to you in my defense.”

But as he spoke about righteousness and self-restraint and the coming judgment, Felix became frightened and said, “You may go for now; when I find an opportunity I shall summon you again.”

Two years passed and Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus. Wishing to ingratiate himself with the Jews, Felix left Paul in prison.

Many times, in synagogue after synagogue, I punished them in an attempt to force them to blaspheme; I was so enraged against them that I pursued them even to foreign cities.

but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,

We are fools on Christ’s account, but you are wise in Christ; we are weak, but you are strong; you are held in honor, but we in disrepute.

For if we are out of our minds, it is for God; if we are rational, it is for you.

and that from infancy you have known [the] sacred scriptures, which are capable of giving you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
