To knowwisdomand instruction,To discernthe sayingsof understanding,
Hear,my son,your father'sinstructionAnd do not forsakeyour mother'steaching;
A wiseson[accepts his] father'sdiscipline,But a scofferdoes not listento rebuke.
Listento counseland acceptdiscipline,That you may be wisethe restof your days.
Inclineyour earand hearthe wordsof the wise,And applyyour mindto my knowledge;
My son,giveattentionto my wisdom,Inclineyour earto my understanding;
Sayto wisdom,"You are my sister,"And callunderstanding[your] intimatefriend;
"We have obeyedthe voiceof Jonadabthe sonof Rechab,our father,in allthat he commandedus, not to drinkwineallour days,we, our wives,our sonsor our daughters,
For thisreasonwe mustpaymuch closerattentionto what we have heard,sothat we do not drift away[from it].
