Nowin the fifteenthyearof the reignof TiberiusCaesar,when PontiusPilatewas governorof Judea,and Herodwas tetrarchof Galilee,and his brotherPhilipwas tetrarchof the regionof Ituraeaand Trachonitis,and Lysaniaswas tetrarchof Abilene,
"The sceptershall not departfrom Judah,Northe ruler'sstafffrom betweenhis feet,UntilShilohcomes,And to him [shall be] the obedienceof the peoples.
At that timeHerodthe tetrarchheardthe newsabout Jesus,
For when Herodhad Johnarrested,he boundhim and puthim in prisonbecauseof Herodias,the wifeof his brotherPhilip.
But when Herod'sbirthdaycame,the daughterof Herodiasdancedbefore[them] and pleasedHerod,
"Tellus then,whatdo You think?Is it lawfulto givea poll-taxto Caesar,ornot?"
and they boundHim, and led Him awayand deliveredHim to Pilatethe governor.
For Herodhimselfhad sentand had Johnarrestedand boundin prisonon accountof Herodias,the wifeof his brotherPhilip,becausehe had marriedher.
A strategicdaycamewhenHerodon his birthdaygavea banquetfor his lordsand military commandersand the leading menof Galilee;
Justat that timesomePhariseesapproached,sayingto Him, "Go away,leavehere,for Herodwantsto killYou."
Nowin thosedaysa decreewentout from CaesarAugustus,that a census be takenof allthe inhabited earth.
And Pilatepronounced sentencethat their demandbe granted.
But when Herodthe tetrarchwas reprimandedby him becauseof Herodias,his brother'swife,and becauseof allthe wicked thingswhichHerodhad done,
NowHerodthe tetrarchheardof allthat was happening;and he was greatly perplexed,becauseit was saidby somethat Johnhad risenfrom the dead,
"ClaudiusLysias,to the most excellentgovernorFelix,greetings.
But after two yearshad passed,Felixwas succeededby PorciusFestus,and wishingto dothe Jewsa favor,FelixleftPaulimprisoned.
The kingstoodup and the governorand Bernice,and thosewho were sittingwith them,
"For trulyin thiscitythere were gathered togetheragainstYour holyservantJesus,whomYou anointed,bothHerodand PontiusPilate,alongwith the Gentilesand the peoplesof Israel,
