So the kingcalledthe Gibeonitesand spoketo them (now the Gibeoniteswere not of the sonsof Israelbut of the remnantof the Amorites,and the sonsof Israelmadea covenantwith them, but Saulhad soughtto killthem in his zealfor the sonsof Israeland Judah).
"You shall makenocovenantwith them or with their gods.
Now it cameabout when Adoni-zedekkingof Jerusalemheardthat Joshuahad capturedAi,and had utterlydestroyedit (justas he had doneto Jerichoand its king,sohe had doneto Aiand its king),and that the inhabitantsof Gibeonhad madepeacewith Israeland were withintheir land,
"Comeup to me and helpme, and let us attackGibeon,for it has madepeacewith Joshuaand with the sonsof Israel."
There was not a citywhichmadepeacewith the sonsof Israelexceptthe Hiviteslivingin Gibeon;they tookthem allin battle.
