Pilatealsowrotean inscriptionand putit on the cross.It was written,"JESUSTHE NAZARENE,THE KINGOF THE JEWS."
and cameand livedin a citycalledNazareth.[This was] to fulfillwhatwas spokenthroughthe prophets:"He shall be calleda Nazarene."
And aboveHis headthey putup the charge againstHim which read,"THISIS JESUSTHE KINGOF THE JEWS."
The inscriptionof the charge againstHim read,"THE KINGOF THE JEWS."
They toldhim that Jesusof Nazarethwas passingby.
Nowthere was alsoan inscriptionaboveHim, "THISIS THE KINGOF THE JEWS."
NathanaelansweredHim, "Rabbi,You are the Sonof God;You are the Kingof Israel."
ThereforePilateenteredagaininto the Praetorium,and summonedJesusand saidto Him, "Are You the Kingof the Jews?"
As a resultof thisPilatemade effortsto releaseHim, but the Jewscriedout saying,"Ifyou releasethis Man,you are nofriendof Caesar;everyonewho makeshimselfout [to be] a kingopposesCaesar."
Nowit was the day of preparationfor the Passover;it was aboutthe sixthhour.And he saidto the Jews,"Behold,your King!"
Sothe chief priestsof the Jewswere sayingto Pilate,"Do not write,The Kingof the Jews;but that He said,'I amKingof the Jews.'"
and they [began] to comeup to Him and say,"Hail,Kingof the Jews!"and to giveHim slaps[in the face].
"So then,I thoughtto myselfthat I hadto domany thingshostileto the nameof Jesusof Nazareth.
But Petersaid,"I do not possesssilverand gold,but whatI do haveI giveto you: In the nameof JesusChristthe Nazarene--walk!"
