Whatis the sourceof quarrelsand conflictsamongyou? Is not the sourceyour pleasuresthat wage warin your members?
"The heartis moredeceitfulthanallelse And is desperatelysick;Whocan understandit?
"For out of the heartcomeevilthoughts,murders,adulteries,fornications,thefts,false witness,slanders.
"You are of [your] fatherthe devil,and you wantto dothe desiresof your father.He was a murdererfrom the beginning,and does not standin the truthbecausethere is notruthin him. Wheneverhe speaksa lie,he speaksfrom his own[nature], for he is a liarand the fatherof lies.
but I seea differentlawin the membersof my body, waging war againstthe lawof my mindand making me a prisonerof the lawof sinwhich is in my members.
For whilewe were in the flesh,the sinfulpassions,which were [aroused] by the Law,were at workin the membersof our body to bear fruitfor death.
becausethe mind seton the fleshis hostiletowardGod;for it does not subjectitself to the lawof God,for it is not evenable[to do so],
For the fleshsets its desireagainstthe Spirit,and the Spiritagainstthe flesh;for theseare in oppositionto one another,sothat you may not dothe things that you please.
Thereforeconsiderthe membersof your earthlybody as deadto immorality,impurity,passion,evildesire,and greed,whichamountsto idolatry.
But refusefoolishand ignorantspeculations,knowingthat they producequarrels.
For we alsooncewere foolishourselves,disobedient,deceived,enslavedto variouslustsand pleasures,spending our lifein maliceand envy,hateful,hatingone another.
But avoidfoolishcontroversiesand genealogiesand strifeand disputesabout the Law,for they are unprofitableand worthless.
But each oneis temptedwhen he is carried awayand enticedby his ownlust.
You askand do not receive,becauseyou askwith wrong motives,sothat you may spend[it] on your pleasures.
As obedientchildren,do not be conformedto the formerlusts[which were yours] in your ignorance,
Beloved,I urgeyou as aliensand strangersto abstainfrom fleshlylustswhichwage waragainstthe soul.
For speakingout arrogant[words] of vanitythey enticeby fleshlydesires,by sensuality,thosewho barelyescapefrom the ones who livein error,
Knowthisfirstof all, that in the lastdaysmockerswill comewith [their] mocking,followingaftertheir ownlusts,
