The man shapesironinto a cuttingtooland doeshis workover the coals,fashioningit with hammersand workingit with his strongarm.He alsogetshungryand his strengthfails;he drinksnowaterand becomesweary.
He took[this] from their hand,and fashionedit with a gravingtooland madeit into a moltencalf;and they said,"Thisis your god,O Israel,whobroughtyou up from the landof Egypt."
"They have quicklyturnedasidefrom the waywhichI commandedthem. They have madefor themselves a moltencalf,and have worshipedit and have sacrificedto it and said,Thisis your god,O Israel,whobroughtyou up from the landof Egypt!'"
[As for] the idol,a craftsmancastsit, A goldsmithplatesit with gold,And a silversmith[fashions] chainsof silver.
He who is too impoverishedfor [such] an offeringSelectsa treethat does not rot;He seeksout for himself a skillfulcraftsmanTo preparean idolthat will not totter.
"Is it not indeedfrom the LORDof hostsThat peoplestoilfor fire,And nationsgrowwearyfor nothing?
"Whatprofitis the idolwhenits makerhas carvedit, [Or] an image,a teacherof falsehood?For [its] makertrustsin his [own] handiworkWhen he fashionsspeechlessidols.
Then the LORDshowedme fourcraftsmen.
"Thereyou will servegods,the workof man'shands,woodand stone,whichneitherseenorhearnoreatnorsmell.
