Abrahamtooksheepand oxenand gavethem to Abimelech,and the twoof them madea covenant.
Then a fugitivecameand toldAbramthe Hebrew.Now he was livingby the oaksof Mamrethe Amorite,brotherof Eshcoland brotherof Aner,and thesewere allieswith Abram.
And Abimelechsaid,"I do not knowwhohas donethisthing;you did not tellme, nordid I hearof it untiltoday."
Then Abrahamsetsevenewelambsof the flockby themselves.
"So nowcome,let us makea covenant,you and I, and let it be a witnessbetweenyou and me."
A bribeis a charmin the sightof its owner;Whereverhe turns,he prospers.
A man'sgiftmakesroomfor him And bringshim beforegreatmen.
A manof [too many] friends[comes] to ruin,But thereis a friendwhostickscloserthana brother.
A giftin secretsubduesanger,And a bribein the bosom,strongwrath.
But the noblemandevisesnobleplans;And by nobleplanshe stands.
He tookone of the royalfamilyand madea covenantwith him, puttinghim under oath.He also tookaway the mightyof the land,
without understanding,untrustworthy,unloving,unmerciful;
Brethren,I speakin termsof humanrelations:even thoughit is [only] a man'scovenant,yetwhen it has been ratified,no onesets it asideoradds conditionsto it.
Then Jonathanmadea covenantwith Davidbecause he lovedhim as himself.
