"You shall not actlikethistoward the LORDyour God.
"For the LORDwill strikeIsrael,as a reedis shakenin the water;and He will uprootIsraelfrom thisgoodlandwhichHe gaveto their fathers,and will scatterthem beyondthe [Euphrates] River,becausethey have madetheir Asherim,provokingthe LORDto anger.
Moreover, you shall not followthe customsof the nationwhichI will driveout beforeyou, for they didallthesethings,and therefore I have abhorredthem.
"You shall teardowntheir altarsand smashtheir [sacred] pillarsand burntheir Asherimwith fire,and you shall cutdownthe engravedimagesof their godsand obliteratetheir namefrom that place.
"But you shall seek[the LORD] at the placewhichthe LORDyour Godwill choosefrom allyour tribes,to establishHis nametherefor His dwelling,and thereyou shall come.
sothat they may not teachyou to doaccording to alltheir detestablethingswhichthey have donefor their gods,so that you would sinagainst the LORDyour God.
