But whenthey stretchedhim out with thongs,Paulsaidto the centurionwho was standingby, "Is it lawfulfor you to scourgea manwho is a Romanand uncondemned?"
But Paulsaidto them, "They have beatenus in publicwithout trial,menwho are Romans,and have thrownus into prison;and noware they sending us awaysecretly?Noindeed!But let them comethemselvesand bringus out."
"I answeredthem that it is not the customof the Romansto handover anymanbeforethe accusedmeetshis accusersface to faceand hasan opportunityto make his defenseagainstthe charges.
but the centurion,wantingto bringPaulsafely through,keptthem from their intention,and commandedthat thosewho couldswimshould jump overboardfirstand getto land,
Paulcalledoneof the centurionsto him and said,"Leadthisyoung manto the commander,for he hassomethingto reportto him."
The nextday we putin at Sidon;and JuliustreatedPaulwith considerationand allowedhim to goto his friendsand receivecare.
Whenit was decidedthat we would sailfor Italy,they proceeded to deliverPauland someotherprisonersto a centurionof the AugustancohortnamedJulius.
Now[there was] a manat CaesareanamedCornelius,a centurionof what was calledthe Italiancohort,
Nowthe centurion,and thosewho were with him keeping guard overJesus,when they sawthe earthquakeand the things that were happening,became veryfrightenedand said,"Trulythiswas the Sonof God!"
But the centurionsaid,"Lord,I amnot worthyfor You to comeundermy roof,but justsaythe word,and my servantwill be healed.
"But bewareof men,for they will handyou over to [the] courtsand scourgeyou in their synagogues;
When the centurionheard[this], he wentto the commanderand toldhim, saying,"Whatare you aboutto do?For thismanis a Roman."
"When thismanwas arrestedby the Jewsand was aboutto be slainby them, I cameup to them with the troopsand rescuedhim, having learnedthat he was a Roman.
