For thoughI causedyou sorrowby my letter,I do not regretit; thoughI did regretit-- [for] I seethat that lettercaused you sorrow,thoughonlyfor a while--
For ifHe causesgrief,Then He will havecompassionAccording to His abundantlovingkindness.
"But becauseI have saidthese thingsto you, sorrowhas filledyour heart.
He saidto him the thirdtime,"Simon,[son] of John,do you loveMe?" Peterwas grievedbecauseHe saidto him the third time,"Do you loveMe?" And he saidto Him, "Lord,You knowall things;You knowthat I loveYou." Jesussaidto him, "TendMy sheep.
For beholdwhatearnestnessthisvery thing,thisgodlysorrow,has producedin you: whatvindicationof yourselves, whatindignation,whatfear,whatlonging,whatzeal,whatavenging of wrong!In everythingyou demonstratedyourselvesto be innocentin the matter.
SoalthoughI wroteto you, [it was] not for the sakeof the offendernorfor the sakeof the one offended,but that your earnestnesson our behalfmight be made knownto you in the sightof God.
But God,who comfortsthe depressed,comfortedus by the comingof Titus;
and not onlyby his coming,but alsoby the comfortwith whichhe was comfortedin you, as he reportedto us your longing,your mourning,your zealfor me; sothat I rejoicedeven more.
I nowrejoice,not that you were madesorrowful,but that you were made sorrowfulto [the point of] repentance;for you were made sorrowfulaccordingto [the will of] God,sothat you might not suffer lossin anythingthroughus.
Those whomI love,I reproveand discipline;thereforebe zealousand repent.
