so thenlet us not sleepas othersdo, but let us be alertand sober.
Lazinesscastsinto a deepsleep,And an idlemanwill sufferhunger.
His watchmenare blind,Allof them knownothing.Allof them are mutedogsunableto bark,Dreamerslyingdown,who loveto slumber;
So the captainapproachedhim and said,"Howis it that you are sleeping?Getup, callon your god.Perhaps[your] godwill be concernedabout us so that we will not perish."
"But whilehis menwere sleeping,his enemycameand sowedtaresamongthe wheat,and went away.
"Thereforebe on the alert,for you do not knowwhichdayyour Lordis coming.
"Be on the alertthen,for you do not knowthe daynorthe hour.
"Nowwhile the bridegroomwas delaying,they allgot drowsyand [began] to sleep.
ThenHe saidto them, "My soulis deeply grieved,to the pointof death;remainhereand keep watchwith Me."
"WhatI sayto you I sayto all,Be on the alert!'"
"Blessedare thoseslaveswhomthe masterwill findon the alertwhen he comes;trulyI sayto you, that he will girdhimself [to serve], and have them recline[at the table], and will comeup and waiton them.
"But be sureof this,that ifthe head of the househad knownat whathourthe thiefwas coming,he would not have allowedhis houseto be brokeninto.
"But keep on the alertat alltimes,prayingthat you may have strengthto escapeallthese thingsthat are aboutto take place,and to standbeforethe Sonof Man."
and saidto them, "Whyare you sleeping?Getup and praythat you may not enterinto temptation."
"Thereforebe on the alert,rememberingthat nightand dayfor a period of three yearsI did not ceaseto admonisheachonewith tears.
Become sober-mindedas you ought,and stopsinning;for somehaveno knowledgeof God.I speak[this] to your shame.
Be on the alert,stand firmin the faith,act like men,be strong.
Amongthem we tooallformerlylivedin the lustsof our flesh,indulgingthe desiresof the fleshand of the mind,and were by naturechildrenof wrath,evenas the rest.
For this reasonit says,"Awake,sleeper,And arisefrom the dead,And Christwill shineon you."
With allprayerand petitionprayat alltimesin the Spirit,and with thisin view,be on the alertwith allperseveranceand petitionfor allthe saints,
Let your gentle[spirit] be knownto allmen.The Lordis near.
Devote yourselvesto prayer,keeping alertin it with [an attitude of] thanksgiving;
But we do not wantyou to be uninformed,brethren,aboutthosewho are asleep,sothat you will not grieveas do the restwho havenohope.
who diedfor us, sothat whetherwe are awakeorasleep,we will livetogetherwith Him.
But since we are of [the] day,let us be sober,having puton the breastplateof faithand love,and as a helmet,the hopeof salvation.
But [women] will be preservedthroughthe bearing of childrenifthey continuein faithand loveand sanctitywith self-restraint.
Likewise,[I want] womento adornthemselveswith properclothing,modestlyand discreetly,not with braided hairand goldorpearlsorcostlygarments,
Women[must] likewise[be] dignified,not malicious gossips,but temperate,faithfulin all things.
An overseer,then,mustbe above reproach,the husbandof onewife,temperate,prudent,respectable,hospitable,able to teach,
But you, be soberin all things,endure hardship,dothe workof an evangelist,fulfillyour ministry.
instructingus to denyungodlinessand worldlydesiresand to livesensibly,righteouslyand godlyin the presentage,
Likewiseurgethe young mento be sensible;
Therefore,prepareyour mindsfor action, keep sober[in spirit], fix your hopecompletelyon the graceto be broughtto you at the revelationof JesusChrist.
The endof all thingsis near;therefore,be of sound judgmentand sober[spirit] for the purpose of prayer.
Be of sober[spirit], be on the alert.Your adversary,the devil,prowls aroundlikea roaringlion,seekingsomeoneto devour.
("Behold,I am cominglikea thief.Blessedis the one who stays awakeand keepshis clothes,sothat he will not walk aboutnakedand men will not seehis shame.")
Wakeup, and strengthenthe things that remain,whichwere aboutto die;for I have not foundyour deedscompletedin the sightof My God.
