Now Eliabhis oldestbrotherheardwhen he spoketo the men;and Eliab'sangerburnedagainst Davidand he said,"Whyhave you comedown?And with whomhave you leftthosefewsheepin the wilderness?I knowyour insolenceand the wickednessof your heart;for you have comedownin orderto seethe battle."
His brotherswere jealousof him, but his fatherkeptthe saying[in mind].
His brotherssawthat their fatherlovedhim morethanallhis brothers;and [so] they hatedhim and couldnot speakto him on friendlyterms.
Then his brotherssaidto him, "Are you actuallygoing to reignoverus? Orare you reallygoing to ruleover us?" So they hatedhim evenmorefor his dreamsand for his words.
Then Rehoboamtookas a wifeMahalaththe daughterof Jerimoththe sonof David[and of] Abihailthe daughterof Eliabthe sonof Jesse,
Maliciouswitnessesriseup; They askme of things that I do not know.
A brotheroffended[is harder to be won] thana strongcity,And contentionsare like the barsof a citadel.
Wrathis fierceand angeris a flood,But whocan standbeforejealousy?
I have seenthat everylaborand everyskillwhich is doneis [the result of] rivalrybetween a manand his neighbor.Thistoois vanityand strivingafter wind.
and A MAN'SENEMIESWILL BE THE MEMBERS OF HIS HOUSEHOLD.
For he knewthat becauseof envythey had handedHim over.
When His own people heard[of] [this], they wentout to take custodyof Him; for they were saying,"He has lost His senses."
But these menrevilethe things whichthey do not understand;and the things whichthey knowby instinct,likeunreasoninganimals,by these thingsthey are destroyed.
Then Samueltookthe hornof oiland anointedhim in the midstof his brothers;and the Spiritof the LORDcamemightilyupon Davidfrom that dayforward.And Samuelaroseand wentto Ramah.
But the LORDsaidto Samuel,"Do not lookat his appearanceor at the heightof his stature,becauseI have rejectedhim; for God[sees] not as mansees,for manlooksat the outwardappearance,but the LORDlooksat the heart."
But Davidsaid,"Whathave I donenow?Was it not just a question?"
