17 Then some of Jesus’ disciples said to one another, “What is this He is telling us: ‘After a little while [longer] you will not see me. Then, a little while [later] you will see me again,’ and ‘Because I am going [back] to the Father’?” [See verse 10].

So, they kept what He told them to themselves, discussing [only] among themselves what “rising again from the dead” meant.


But His disciples did not understand what He meant and were afraid to ask Him.


But His disciples did not understand [what He meant by] any of these things, for this message was hidden from them so they did not comprehend what He was saying.


But they did not understand what He was talking about, for it was hidden from them, so that they would not understand its meaning. And they were afraid to ask Him about what He had said.


His disciples did not understand these things at first, but after Jesus received splendor [in heaven], then they remembered that these things had been written about Him [in Scripture] and that people had done such things to Him.


[Then] Judas (not the betrayer) [Note: This was the son of James, See Luke 6:16. He is also called Thaddaeus, See Matt. 10:3], said to Jesus, “Lord, what has happened [i.e., to your original plans to be seen by everyone when you came. See Luke 21:27], that you will reveal yourself to us apostles [only] and not to the [whole] world?”


Thomas said to Jesus, “Lord, we do not know where you are going; how could we [possibly] know the way [to get there]?”


[Jesus continued], “I have told you these things so that you men would not fall away [i.e., from the faith].


“After a little while [longer] you will not see me anymore. Then a little while [later] you will see me again.”


So, they [again] said, “What does He mean by saying, ‘A little while’? We do not know what He is talking about.”


Jesus sensed that the disciples wanted to ask Him a question, so He said to them, “Are you discussing among yourselves my saying ‘After a little while [longer] you will not see me. Then, a little while [later] you will see me again’?


“But now I am going to Him who sent me; yet none of you is asking me, ‘Where are you going?’
