And the Lord sent an angel who cut off all the mighty warriors and commanders and officers in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned in disgrace to his own land. When he came into the house of his god, some of his own sons struck him down there with the sword.
and said, “O my God, I am too ashamed and embarrassed to lift my face to you, my God, for our iniquities have risen higher than our heads, and our guilt has mounted up to the heavens.
“He has made me a byword of the peoples, and I am one before whom people spit.
It is for your sake that I have borne reproach, that shame has covered my face.
Let my accusers be put to shame and consumed; let those who seek to hurt me be covered with scorn and disgrace.
You have cut short the days of his youth; you have covered him with shame. Selah
Let us lie down in our shame, and let our dishonor cover us, for we have sinned against the Lord our God, we and our ancestors, from our youth even to this day, and we have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God.”
We are put to shame, for we have heard insults; dishonor has covered our faces, for aliens have come into the holy places of the Lord’s house.
All who pass along the way clap their hands at you; they hiss and wag their heads at daughter Jerusalem: “Is this the city that was called the perfection of beauty, the joy of all the earth?”
