He gave a sign the same day, saying, “This is the sign that the Lord has spoken: The altar shall be torn down, and the ashes that are on it shall be poured out.”


“When Pharaoh says to you, ‘Perform a wonder,’ then you shall say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh, and it will become a snake.’ ”


When he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?”


The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, asking him for a sign from heaven, to test him.

This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”


They asked him, “Why, then, are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?”


So they said to him, “What sign are you going to give us, then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing?


When they had made the prisoners stand in their midst, they inquired, “By what power or by what name did you do this?”


saying, “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you are determined to bring this man’s blood on us.”
