Shall the ax vaunt itself over the one who wields it or the saw magnify itself against the one who handles it? As if a rod should raise the one who lifts it up, or as if a staff should lift the one who is not wood!


Woe to Assyria, the rod of my anger— the club in their hands is my fury!


They come from a distant land, from the end of the heavens, the Lord and the weapons of his indignation, to destroy the whole earth.


“Have you not heard that I determined it long ago? I planned from days of old what now I bring to pass, that you should make fortified cities crash into heaps of ruins,


Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped to subdue nations before him and to strip kings of their robes, to open doors before him— and the gates shall not be closed:


Take notice, you peoples, and be dismayed; listen, all you far countries; gird yourselves and be dismayed!


This whole land shall become a ruin and a waste, and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.


I am going to send for all the tribes of the north, says the Lord, even for King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon, my servant, and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants and against all these nations around; I will utterly destroy them and make them an object of horror and of hissing and an everlasting disgrace.


How the hammer of the whole earth is cut down and broken! How Babylon has become a horror among the nations!


The sword is given to be polished to be grasped in the hand; it is sharpened; the sword is polished to be placed in the slayer’s hand.


I will pour out my indignation upon you; with the fire of my wrath I will blow upon you. I will deliver you into brutish hands, those skillful to destroy.


But they do not know the thoughts of the Lord; they do not understand his plan, that he has gathered them as sheaves to the threshing floor.


Arise and thresh, O daughter Zion, for I will make your horn iron and your hoofs bronze; you shall beat in pieces many peoples and shall devote their gain to the Lord, their wealth to the Lord of the whole earth.


A scatterer has come up against you. Guard the ramparts; watch the road; gird your loins; collect all your strength.


Out of them shall come the cornerstone, out of them the tent peg, out of them the battle bow, out of them every commander.


The king was enraged. He sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.
