How could one have routed a thousand and two put a myriad to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, the Lord had given them up?


quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight.


One of you puts to flight a thousand, since it is the Lord your God who fights for you, as he promised you.


Immediately he called to the young man who carried his armor and said to him, “Draw your sword and kill me, so people will not say about me, ‘A woman killed him.’ ” So the young man thrust him through, and he died.


The men of the garrison hailed Jonathan and his armor-bearer, saying, “Come up to us, and we will show you something.” Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, “Come up after me, for the Lord has given them into the hand of Israel.”


In that first attack Jonathan and his armor-bearer killed about twenty men within an area about half a furrow long in an acre of land.
