and he went and found the body thrown in the road, with the donkey and the lion standing beside the body. The lion had not eaten the body or attacked the donkey.


“Go from here and turn eastward, and hide yourself by the Wadi Cherith, which is east of the Jordan.


So he went and did according to the word of the Lord; he went and lived by the Wadi Cherith, which is east of the Jordan.


“Go now to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and live there, for I have commanded a widow there to feed you.”


When he is quiet, who can condemn? When he hides his face, who can behold him? Whether nation or person, it is the same—


Who provides for the raven its prey, when its young ones cry to God and wander about for lack of food?


He gives to the animals their food and to the young ravens when they cry.


Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish,


“Take the staff, and assemble the congregation, you and your brother Aaron, and command the rock before their eyes to yield its water. Thus you shall bring water out of the rock for them; thus you shall provide drink for the congregation and their livestock.”


Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him.


But he answered, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”
