And before this, Eli´ashib the priest, having the oversight of the chamber of the house of our God, was allied unto Tobi´ah:
And next unto them the Teko´ites repaired; but their nobles put not their necks to the work of their Lord.
Then I consulted with myself, and I rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I set a great assembly against them.
And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God.
For there were many in Judah sworn unto him, because he was the son-in-law of Shechani´ah the son of Arah; and his son Jo´hanan had taken the daughter of Meshul´lam the son of Berechi´ah.
