Therefore, when the people had gathered together, Pilate asked them, “Whom do you want me to release, Barabbas or Jesus, who is called ‘Christ’?”
But the governor asked them, “Which one of these two men do you want me to release to you?” And they answered, “Barabbas.”
And he said, “Why [should he be]? What wrong has he done?” But they shouted out even louder, “Let him be crucified!”
Now the leading priests and the entire Council [called the “Sanhedrin”] were looking for [false] witnesses to testify against Jesus in order to put Him to death, but did not find any.
[Then] the woman said to Jesus, “I know that Messiah is coming ([He is] the One who is called Christ). And when He does come, He will tell us everything.”
They asked Pilate to have Him put to death, even though they could not find any [legitimate] reason to execute Him.
