A large crowd of people followed Jesus, including some women who wailed [in grief] and mourned over His plight.
And after the crowds that had gathered to witness this sight saw what had happened they left, beating their chests [i.e., as an expression of anguish over witnessing Jesus’ death].
And when Jesus came to the [synagogue official’s] house, He did not allow anyone to enter with Him except Peter, James, John and the girl’s father and mother.
And they laughed at Him scornfully, knowing that she was [already] dead.
But when Jesus heard this, He said, “This illness will not result in [his] death, but was intended to bring honor to God, so that the Son of God would be honored by it.”
