But when the Pharisees saw this, they said to Him, “Look, your disciples are doing what is against the Law of Moses to do on a Sabbath day.”
“Why do your disciples violate the tradition of the [Jewish] elders? For they do not [ceremonially] wash their hands before eating [their meals].”
And the Pharisees asked Him, “Look, why are they [i.e., Jesus’ disciples] doing what is against the Law of Moses on the Sabbath day?”
Then they said to Jesus, “John’s [the Immerser’s] disciples fast frequently [i.e., going without food and/or drink for religious reasons] and they offer earnest prayer requests, and the disciples of the Pharisees do the same things. But your disciples eat and drink.”
So, for this reason the Jews began persecuting Jesus, because He did these [kinds of] things on the Sabbath day.
